Harvest Truck
It’s
a real beaut, a 1976 pumpkin-colored Chevrolet Scottsdale pickup. My dad
took me to the off-road trails near our house to learn how to drive in this
truck. He said if I learned how to drive this, I could drive anything. This
truck has become something of a symbol of the Krause family for my friends.
When I have it parked in front of my house in Boise, they all wax nostalgic
about the old days on the ski team, when my dad drove the truck to work every
day, and it occasionally went up the 172 turns of the Bogus Basin Ski Resort
road.
The idea of using “The Jalopy” for harvest was a bit embarrassing at first, but since our Toyota Tacoma, while great for ski trips and mountain biking outings, is not nearly big enough to haul loads over one ton, we resigned ourselves to bumping around in a truck so loud and leaky you can’t hear the radio much less a cell phone call. The gaps between the door and the doorframe are large enough that a surprise hail storm in the vineyards sent hail through the crack and right into my face as I was driving!
But the Jalopy has hauled up to 2,400 pounds for me without missing a beat. So what if you break a sweat getting the seat belt wrestled into place?
